Hi, I’m originally from Portland, Oregon — and now have semi-retired back home. Here my passion for writing and indeed music, especially drums, began early, finding satisfaction when I began to turn out stories about bands and musicians, clubs and concerts for Jazzscene, Positively Entertainment and The Downtowner. Then in 1982 I authored The First Book of Oregon Jazz, Rock & All Sorts of Music, a compendium of the local music scene that included some 150 local and national musicians.
Here, from people I met and events I experienced, were planted the seeds of my (unpublished) novel, Sweet Compulsions: A Wry Tale of Music, Multiculture and Mayhem.
Along the way I evaluated manuscripts, helped new fiction writers and self-published Be A Successful Writer (now out of print).
My passion for photography was triggered by travel, having lived in France for 14 months at age 19 and at this point having visited some 108 cities in 21 countries. My best travel photos can be viewed at http://community.webshots.com/user/riocarolan
In many years in San Diego my day job involved writing of a scientific nature and database admin. Now I’ve been asked back so I’m beginning a part-time telecommuting gig for the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center based at UC San Diego. And I’m most definitely ecstatic!
Also for the past 6 years I’ve maintained a blog with rants, raves, reminiscences, etc. where I have also used both photos and music wherever they fit. On the Upbeat — http://blogcast.on-the-upbeat.com
As ever,
Carolan
